Turning sunshine into savings: our solar success story
04 September 2026 • Our Insights
More than a year after installing rooftop solar at our Newmarket Road head office, the results are in – and they’re already making a meaningful difference to both our operations and our sustainability ambitions.
The 258-panel system, installed by Spartek, was delivered in just five weeks, with no operational shutdowns and minimal disruption.
Strong performance in year one
In its first full calendar year, the 116.1 kWp system has generated an impressive 72,664 kWh of renewable electricity – roughly equivalent to the annual energy consumption of around 25 average UK homes – and is expected to be even higher for the following year.
Crucially, around 80% of this energy has been used directly on site, helping to power our day-to-day operations and reducing reliance on grid electricity. This has delivered savings of approximately £12,700 on energy bills in the first year alone.
The remaining 20% of generated electricity has been exported back to the grid, generating an additional £444.84 in revenue.

A significant milestone
The installation itself was a significant milestone. Our head office is home to one of the largest commercial slate roofs in central Cambridge, and at the time of completion this was the largest slate roof solar project Spartek had undertaken.
Supporting our sustainability journey
This project demonstrates how we can integrate renewable energy into a complex, city centre building while maintaining business continuity. It also highlights the important role on-site generation can play in reducing both carbon emissions and operating costs.
As we continue to progress our sustainability strategy, the performance of our rooftop solar is a strong example of practical action delivering measurable impact.
